I have naturally curly/wavy hair and I have never been one to spend hours styling it every day. I tend to just let it do what it pleases. Having said that, as all of us with curly hair know, leaving your curls to their own devices is usually associated with unwanted frizz (especially if you are at the coast or the heavens open)! Over the years I have tried many different hair products to reduce the frizziness, while keeping the wave or curl.
One of the challenges I face on my quest to use only eco-friendly and natural products, is finding a natural shampoo and conditioner that adequately nourishes and moisturises my hair to help control the frizz.
In December I stumbled across the website for ‘The Perfect Hair’. The Perfect Hair manufactures and sells a selection of locally made, natural haircare products, designed with African oils and conditioning polymers, perfect for African hair. Now although I have curly hair, I don’t have African hair, but the site detailed different products for different kinds of curls: wave, curl and coil. After reading through the product details and watching their videos, I thought I probably qualified as a ‘wavy curl’, so I decided to give it a try. I collected a sample starter pack, consisting of their ‘CoWash’ (shampoo), conditioner and styling gel, just in time for the December holidays, when my hair takes more strain in the sea and sun.
The fact that the products are all sold in recyclable glass containers (which can be brought back to the store for a R10 discount on your next purchase), instead of plastic, which I am trying to reduce my use of (to save the earth and our oceans) was an added bonus! (Although you need to be careful not to break the glass containers in the shower.)
Instead of a traditional shampoo, The Perfect Hair makes what they call a CoWash, which is a moisturising alternative. It doesn’t foam like a normal shampoo (foaming agents are generally terrible for the environment) and you have to apply it and rinse it out twice.
The conditioner can either be used like a traditional conditioner (although it is recommended that it is left in for 20 minutes before rinsing) or as a nourishing hair treatment that is applied liberally and left in overnight before rinsing.
The style gel is applied to towel-dried hair after washing and conditioning, and left in to help control your curls as they dry.
I think they’re great! I really think these products are wonderfully nourishing for curly hair and definitely reduced my frizz, helping to define the curls without being sticky or weighing my hair down. Oh, and did I mention that they smell great?!
I am not convinced that the CoWash is necessary for my hair – my hair is pretty fine and I wash it a couple of times a week as it is short. I think using all three products together weighed my hair down a bit too much, but I think for people with thicker, curlier and longer hair than mine it would be fine. The conditioner is a definite winner – I also tried it as a leave in conditioner (applying a little to my wet hair) and loved it. It didn’t make my hair greasy or heavy, but helped define the curls. The styling gel is also lovely – it feels a bit sticky when you apply it, but it dries soft and without any residue. I did, however, have to play around with the amount I added to get the best results (it is possible to add too much, which then weighed my curl down a bit much). So different curls, thicknesses and lengths would require different amounts, and I guess it also depends on the result you’re after.
While away in December, I also gave it to my mother-in-law and niece to give it a try, as they both sport heads of tight curls. They loved it so much that I ended up having to decant some of my conditioner for each of them before I left.
It, therefore, gets the thumbs up (especially the conditioner) from me.
